How to Bet On the Premier League

Betting on the Premier League online is a simple process and should only take you 5 minutes:

  1. Create an account: You can create a new account directly through the sportsbook website or by downloading the mobile app for Android or iOS. You will need to provide your name, mailing address, email and set up a password. On some occasions, you will be asked for a promo code or bonus code. You will need to use the codes from this page to qualify for the special promotions.
  2. Make a first deposit: New customers can benefit from a range of special offers, from free bets to matched bonuses, which can be used in conjunction with enhanced odds that are exclusively available to new registrants. Taking a free bet or any type of offer for new customers is not mandatory. Unless a free bet offer is being used, a deposit must be made before placing a wager. This can be done via bank account (through a debit card), PayPal, or a virtual wallet, with Neteller and Skrill being the most popular.
  3. Choose the type of wager and place it: EPL matches are always easy to find on all online betting sites, and a select few will often be listed on the home page, with just two clicks or taps (either side of the wager entered) often being enough to place the bet. There will always be action buttons to ease the process of placing a bet, but clicking on a team's odds will automatically add them to the betting slip. Adding multiple bets will open up the possibility of placing an accumulator or multiple bet, with the potential payout increasing as more bets are added.

Free Bet Offers & Match Bet Bonuses

All bookmakers will give new customers some type of tangible offer when they sign up. Free betting promotions are a common offer, but in the event that it is used in a winning bet, only the winnings are returned, with the amount of free credit used to place the bet retained by the bookmaker.

This is also known as a ‘matched bet'. For instance, if a wager was to be placed on one team winning a match at odds of 5/2 (or +750) from a $10 free bet, and it prevailed, the payout is just $75 without the would-be stake ($10) returned.

You need to make sure you read through the terms and conditions before accepting a free bet offer. For example, winnings may be capped at a certain amount, no matter how high the payout, or the pay out may even come in the form of additional free betting credit, rather than actual winnings that can be withdrawn.

Match Bet bonuses are much more difficult to find, though the stake is returned along with any winnings if used successfully. However, these come with wagering requirements, which means that the customer must wager the bonus amount a set number of times to enable the withdrawal of any future winnings at all.

Betting Apps

Every notable bookmaker has a betting app which offers the same services its website does

These are much more compact in their layout, and fully customizable, to ensure that the user's preferred sports are shown most prominently. This prevents endless scrolling and squinting at the screen of the device, and ensures an optimal betting experience.

Understanding the Odds

Aside from being the stake multiplier that determines the potential payout, odds are a reflection of the considered likelihood of a particular event occurring. The term ‘Evens' refers to an event that is considered 50% likely to happen, like the flip of a coin.

Depending on how the odds are presented, there are ways of telling whether an event is considered more or less likely to happen than not.

Under 50% chance / Odds against

  • American: Greater than +100
  • Decimal: Higher than 2.00
  • Fractional: Greater number/Lower number (e.g. 11/2)

Over 50% chance / ‘Odds-on'

  • American: Lower than -100
  • Decimal: Lower than 2.00
  • Fractional: Lower number/Greater number (e.g. 1/4)

If a winning bet comes through for odds-on teams, the payout on top of the returned stake will only be a fraction of the initial wager's value.

While this seems to be of little use, many experienced bettors will place these safer wagers to build up a small profit, and then use that on a more speculative wager (like any of 2019/20's newly-promoted teams winning the title at odds of thousands-to-one).

Lengthening v Shortening

Odds are lengthening if the numbers shown in Decimal and American format are rising, or the difference between the two numbers is increasing under the Fractional format is getting bigger, with the number on the left increasing and/or the number on the right decreasing.

Decimal and American values that are getting lower indicate shortening odds. Fractional odds are shortening if the number on the right is increasing and/or the one on the left is decreasing.

Premier League Standings

Live Premier League standings are available on bookmaker and odds comparison sites alike. For mobile users, there are also apps that solely deal with live football standings, some of which may have sponsored links to bookmakers that have offers which pertain to league standings.

Fantasy Premier League

Also abbreviated as FPL, this is a seasonal competition that enables people to sign up and manage a team comprising of 15 Premier League players. Each player has a virtual $100m to spend on players, all of which are priced according to their perceived ability.

Players are awarded points based on positive actions. Most commonly, points are attained by scoring goals, claiming assists, pulling off penalty saves, and keeping clean sheets. Yellow and red cards, goals conceded, own goals and penalty misses are the main causes of points being deducted.

Managers are automatically entered into leagues based on nationality and their favorite club. However, they can also create and join leagues, and invite friends to participate.

Premier League Teams

Full details on the 20 teams that will participate in the 2019/20 EPL season can be found here.

Best players in the EPL

The Premier League has seen some truly fantastic talents come and go over the course of its almost three-decade existence. With the league only getting richer and more attractive to foreign stars, 2019/20 will continue to set the standard of excellence in European club football.

Best defenders

Virgil Van Dijk was crowned 2018/19 PFA Players' Player of the Year, having transformed Liverpool from an outfit once seen as exceptional in attack but porous in defence. Standing at 6'5 and easily worth nine figures in today's transfer market, he is not only a composed figure at the back, but also a real threat as the recipient of set-pieces.

Alongside him, Scottish international Andrew Robertson will continue to be an unbelievable threat on the left flank, having finished as the best overall defender in the 2018/19 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) contest. Much of this can be attributed to his high assist rate, and on the opposite flank, Trent Alexander-Arnold has also thrived to nearly the same degree, finishing third in the FPL's defender rankings just behind Van Dijk.

However, Manchester City are champions for a reason, and England internationals Kyle Walker and John Stones have gone from strength to strength over the course of their respective periods with the champions. Throughout 2018/19, they played either side of Belgian central defender Aymeric Laporte, a tall and commanding influence in the sky blue jersey.

Chelsea did not enjoy a great 2018/19 by their standards, but after Laporte, three Chelsea players made up the remainder of the FPL's top seven defenders. They were David Luiz, Mikel Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta. Alonso in particular is well-known for his ability to provide goals and assists.

Best midfielders

Once again, Mo Salah of Liverpool gained the most FPL points in the midfield rankings, by virtue of getting more than twice as many assists as any other midfield teammate, and finishing as joint-top scorer of the 2018/19 EPL alongside Sadio Mané with 22 goals.

The highest-scoring ‘midfielder' from 2018/19 still in the Premier League roster is Manchester City's Raheem Sterling. He netted 15 goals last season, and was crowned both PFA Young Player of the Year and the Football Writers' player of the year by the FWA. Teammate Leroy Sané was not far behind, finishing on 12 goals.

Despite being designated as midfielders by the FPL game, all of those listed above are essentially wide-forwards. It is easy to overlook the efforts of those who play further back in the centre of the park, and players such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, Luka Milivojevi? and James Maddison are easily overlooked by their more celebrated peers.

Sigurdsson proved particularly dangerous at times for Everton throughout 2018/19, maintaining his reputation as a great deliverer of set-pieces, and an exquisite long-range shooter, netting some memorable strikes against Leicester and Manchester United.

Milivojevi? is also an expert from set-pieces, and boasts an excellent penalty conversion ratio, while 21 year-old Maddison has proven to be an invaluable provider of assists to Leicester's main striker Jamie Vardy, despite only making the step up from the second-tier EFL Championship last year.

Best goalkeepers

Last season, Liverpool goalkeeper and Brazil international Allison Becker won the golden glove award for keeping the highest number of clean sheets. His Brazil teammate and EPL title rival Ederson finished just seven FPL points behind him, having marshalled the Manchester City defence effectively once again.

Everton's Jordan Pickford made up the top three goalkeepers of 2018/19. Now the number one goalkeeper for England, Pickford is a remarkably brave goalkeeper, with a tendency to charge down attackers before they can compose themselves enough to strike. Pickford also has a remarkable ratio of saves against the penalties he has faced.

Highest paid players

According to Forbes Magazine (in January 2019), the highest-paid Premier League players were as follows:

  • Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City – $418,000 per week
  • Alexis Sanchez, Manchester United – $410,000
  • Paul Pogba, Manchester United – $378,000
  • Gonzalo Higuaín, Chelsea – $352,000
  • Mesut Ozil, Arsenal – $350,000

Top scorers

Along with Liverpool duo Salah and Mané, Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished on a league-high of 22 goals in 2018/19. Just one goal behind was City's long-time main striker Sergio Aguero, who now boasts a personal haul of four Premier League winners' medals.

Aguero also has a real incentive to perform next season, as 12 goals will be enough to see him overtake Thierry Henry as the fifth-highest goalscorer in EPL history.

Once again, English duo Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane were amongst the chasing pack throughout the season, finishing on 18 and 17 goals apiece. However, it should be noted that Kane spent much of Spring 2019 on the treatment table, and will likely improve upon that tally in 2019/20.

Live betting in the premier league

Live betting on an EPL match is the same as doing so antepost (before the match start).

Naturally, odds will fluctuate much more frequently and drastically, but all of the popular markets are in place as long as they have not already been settled. For instance, if two teams are drawing 1-1 after ten minutes, all bets on both teams scoring in that match have already been ‘settled' (and won).

Key flashpoints other than goals (such as red cards or even just a dangerous attack) can make an impact on odds, and because of this potential for heavy fluctuation, in-play bets (made during matches) are often subject to a delay of several seconds.

Occasionally, some bookmakers may even design a set wager in reaction to those events, i.e: ‘Manchester United to score next and Maguire next player to be booked'.

Biggest Upsets in History

The outright odds list has generally been reflected in the EPL league table. That was the case last season, as favorites Manchester City won the EPL title, but as recently as 2015/16, the biggest outright upset unfolded when Leicester City overcame odds of 5000/1 to win the league by a ten-point margin.

The season just gone also produced some surprise match results from time to time.

Wolves did particularly well in that department, defying their short relegation odds as a promoted team in 2018/19. Nuno Espirito Santo's men finished seventh after surprise wins over Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal at home, while beating Tottenham away and holding champions Manchester City to a draw.

Like its predecessors, EPL season 2019/20 will undoubtedly see a few surprising match results.

EPL History

At the time of the Premier League's formation in 1992, English football had a reputation for being ugly and scrappy, more famous for its tackling and reliance on goalkeepers punting balls straight towards attackers.

However, the new resources granted by the formation of the Premier League, and its exclusive broadcasting partnership with BskyB (Sky Sports) ensured that homegrown talents could be better coached. So too would it make the league more attractive to the best foreign players across the world.

The mid-1990s were all about French striker Eric Cantona, who was completely unplayable on his day, and his exploits provided the blueprint of how foreign flair and native hardiness could be blended to devastating effect.

In 1999, Manchester United famously completed a ‘treble', winning the F.A Cup and Champions League on top of the Premier League. By that time, Dutch defender Jaap Stam had also staked his place in the United ranks, and he is still considered to be one of the best foreign players in the history of the Premier League.

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's takeover of Chelsea (in 2003) proved to be a key flashpoint in this facet of the modern game. At the end of 2002/03, the Blues had qualified for the Champions League, and this combined beautifully with Abramovich's money.

Over the next two years, major talents like Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba, Claude Makelele and Petr Cech came flooding in, and in April 2005, Chelsea won the English top-flight trophy for the first time in fifty years.

ADUG's takeover of Manchester City in 2008 provides an even more emphatic example of how a relatively ordinary team can become the next success story overnight.

EPL Betting Tips

The most important thing to bear in mind is not how much you are winning, but how much you are out of pocket. On matchdays, smart bettors will often place a number of bets, but place smaller wagers on the unlikely outcomes.

Accumulators are one way around this, as backing five dead-certs to win might only yield a fraction of the stake as payout (alongside the returned stake) but a profit has still been made. For instance, if a $1 profit was made on a $10 bet on three very strong teams, that $1 can be used on even the most outrageous bets, without incurring a needless loss.

A 3-way bet can also be helpful in generating marginal profits (for the same purpose) to offset against loss. A 3-Way bet is a wager on all possible outcomes of an EPL match (Home win/Draw/Away win). Thus, a win is guaranteed, but so is the loss of two wagers on the outcomes that do not prevail.

Though no 3-way bettor is immune from a potential overall loss, smart users of betting sites will hedge their bets according to how likely a team is to win. For example:

  • Liverpool win (9/50 or -556) – Wager: $20
  • Draw (15/2 or +750) – Wager: $2
  • Norwich win (20/1 or +2000) – Wager: $1

If Liverpool win as expected, this is what happens:

  • Liverpool win (9/50 or -556) – Win (Profit: $3.60)
  • Draw (15/2 or +750) – Loss: $2
  • Norwich win (20/1 or +2000) – Loss: $1

In this instance, the overall profit is $0.60, which can then be used on something much more speculative without incurring a loss.

EPL Futures Odds

The futures market for the Premier League stays active nearly year-round. These are bets you can place on something that will happen as the season plays out or at its completion. It's a long-term bet in which you place your bets and hold the ticket until settlement.

The most popular bet in the EPL market is on which club will go on to finish in first place at the end of the regular season. Offerings will vary, but some operators will also offer markets on things such as Top Four finishers, team regular-season points and which clubs will be relegated when all is said and done.

Once the current campaign is in the books, sportsbooks will release odds for the next. After the release, bets begin to trickle in. That'll lead to some shifts on the board based on betting action.

The basic idea is to find the EPL lines that you want at the best possible prices. For some bettors, that means placing their bets soon after lines are released and holding on; others prefer to stay on top of the market and look for appealing opportunities all season. Regardless of when you place your futures bets, the returns can be quite lucrative if you can make the correct call from those in the field.

Check the EPL tab at any US online sportsbook to see current Premier League championship odds.

Premier League Relegation Odds

The bottom three teams in EPL for the season are relegated, which means they move down to a lower competition level and drop out of the EPL spotlight. Needless to say, it's a terrible outcome for any EPL club. You, however, can take joy in the fact you can bet on which teams will be relegated and make a profit from it.

FA Cup/Champions League Odds

The excitement doesn't end once the Premier League season is in the books. The top four teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the fifth-place squad is entered into the FA Cup. Here's how those two competitions work.

The UEFA is also sometimes referred to as the European Cup. Back in the day, this was a knockout competition featuring the winners of various leagues across the continent. Since 1992, a round robin format was adopted and additional teams have been invited.

The group stage of the tournament plays out from September through December with 16 teams advancing to the next round. At that point, it's a knockout stage that runs through the final, which typically takes place in May.

The FA Cup is open to teams from all levels of competition in England. The competition begins in August and spans 12 rounds through May, followed by semi-finals and final, all of which are contested under knockout rules.

Major online sportsbooks in the US provide betting odds for both UEFA and FA, so you'll be able to bet right along as your favorite Premier League squads advance through those competitions.

How does EPL betting work?

Betting on the EPL is similar to betting on other team-based sports, but there are also some nuances of soccer betting you'll need to understand. Let's take a look at the main soccer bet types you'll have to consider and what you'll need to know.

EPL Moneyline Betting

At most online sportsbooks, the featured listing for EPL games is a moneyline bet with three choices. You can choose either side to win or bet on a draw as the end result.

  • Newcastle +130
  • Draw +220
  • AstonVilla +200

If you click through on the ‘more wagers' link, you'll find even more ways to bet, including a double chance, which is a bet on either a side plus a draw or either side to win.

  • NewcastleandDraw -280
  • AstonVillaandDraw -190
  • NewcastleandAstonVilla -250

You can also take the draw out of the equation and simply wager on a side to win. This is known as a draw no bet, which means a tied game will result in a push.

  • Newcastle -140
  • AstonVilla +120

EPL Spread Betting

Just like in other team sports, there's a point spread betting option. For basketball betting and American football (NFL) betting, the number can be all over the map. When it comes to baseball betting or hockey betting, it's typically in a set range. The same holds true for soccer since games are generally low scoring.

  • Norwich +1 (-115)
  • HandicapDraw +1 (+280)
  • Everton -1 (-260)

If the final score is exact with the spread factored in, then the handicap no draw option is graded the winner.

EPL Totals Betting

For totals betting, you'll generally find a few options to consider, ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 goals. The odds will vary across all options, while the one that oddsmakers deem the most likely benchmark will have the closest range between the two numbers.

  • Over 2.5 (-105)
  • Under 2.5 (-115)

Outside of these three main ways to bet, you'll also have several other wager types to consider.

  • Correct Score: A bet on the winning side and exact final score.
  • First Goalscorer: Which player will record the first score of the game?
  • Both Teams to Score: A simple yes or no bet on both teams to find paydirt.
  • Half-Time Result: Will either side hold the lead or will the game be tied?
  • Result and Both to Score: A wager on the winning side if both teams score with a draw also an option.

Additionally, you'll be able to bet on the matches as the action plays out on the pitch in real time. This is known as live betting, a popular innovation that has become a must-have feature for online and mobile sportsbooks.

Premier league betting predictions

The markets move fast and offerings will vary based on what's happening, but that only enhances the appeal for many users. Among the opportunities you may come across are odds for which side will lead at the half, and unique game or player props.

Premier League Player Props

There are also a number of different prop betting opportunities to consider for each EPL match. Props are basically side bets on circumstances that may come up from a player, team or game perspective during the match.

  • To score two or more goals

In short, let's just say you'll have plenty of different ways to bet on the individual EPL games and the season as a whole.

How to Play Premier League Soccer DFS

Daily Fantasy Sports for the Premier League is a thing and it's offered by both DraftKings and FanDuel, the two top online destinations for DFS. There's a wide range of contests offered, such as tournaments, 50/50s, head-to-heads and multipliers.

In general, the bigger slates have the largest tournaments and prize pools. There are also single-game options for some of the noteworthy contests on the schedule. The roster requirements on the two platforms are slightly different, but both are based off of the salary cap format.

  • DK: 2 F, 2 M, 2 D, 1 Util, 1 GK
  • FD: 4 F/M, 2 D, 1 GK

As is the case with other sports, scoring is handled differently by the two sites. For example, goals and assists are worth 10 and six points, respectively, on DraftKings. Over on FanDuel, it's 15 points for a goal and seven for an assist.

To build out a quality lineup, you'll want to research all of the matches on the slate. The sports betting odds board can point you in the direction of which side is expected to win, and you can also dig into the goal-scoring props to get a sense of which players could be in line to do some celebrating.

Additionally, DFS advice is a cottage industry, so you'll find plenty of analysis and research tools to use on the interwebs. EPL DFS can help you gain an even greater understanding of the league and its players, and it can be a potentially profitable endeavor to boot.

For those new to Premier League betting, you should know there may be a learning curve as you build familiarity. However, the good news is you can lean on similar handicapping principles that are used in other sports.

Premier League Betting Odds

As an example, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled on important news and notes surrounding the game, and make realistic assessments of the overall strengths and weaknesses on both sides.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind as you work towards achieving success with EPL betting.

  • Odds and Line Moves: The odds board gives you a quick snapshot of which side is expected to win the game and how many goals may be scored. This is a key piece of the research puzzle for each matchup, so fully understand what the oddsmakers are telling you. In addition, pay attention to movement in the lines after the initial release. This can point out which way the money is flowing and potentially alert you to new developments.
  • Matchups and Historical Data: Beyond gaining a sense of the strengths and weaknesses on both sides, you'll also want to go deeper and see how they actually stack up against each other. You can accomplish this by reviewing the historical matchup data. How much scoring do the two teams typically combine for? What has the game flow been like? The past is no guarantee of the future, but it can certainly provide valuable clues.
  • Recent Form and Trends: The EPL season is a lengthy one, so it's next to inevitable that the clubs will hit peaks and valleys at certain times. Said another way, don't just look at overall records and call it a day. Take the time to understand how the squads have been performing in recent games. Also, look out for clues on how they perform in certain circumstances — home/away, as favorite or underdog, etc.

As you gain more experience with EPL betting, you can also do some deeper analysis on overall league trends. Here's a pair of interesting ones to keep in your back pocket.

According to an interesting piece on Goal.com, favorites win about six out of 10 matches on the Premier League circuit. A study on Smarkets went over the data for five EPL seasons and came away with this: 46.2% of home teams win, while the away team won 26.3% of time. Draws happened 27.5% of the time in the same range of games.

While we can't promise that all of those trends will hold true throughout an EPL campaign, it certainly suggests that you need to build a real solid case when going against home favorites.
